Understanding Onyx
Onyx is a form of banded calcite or aragonite known for its striking, often translucent bands of color, ranging from soft honey tones to deep greens and reds. Its translucency makes it a favorite for backlit accent walls, vanities, and decorative features where light can pass through the stone.
Onyx is one of the softest natural stones used in interior design and is highly reactive to acids, more porous than marble, and prone to cracking under stress, which is why it is almost always used as an accent material rather than a high-traffic surface.

Where Onyx Is Typically Installed
- ✓Backlit accent walls and feature panels
- ✓Bathroom vanity tops (low-traffic)
- ✓Fireplace surrounds
- ✓Bar tops and decorative furniture
- ✓Reception desks in upscale commercial spaces
Typical Finishes
Polished
The standard finish, maximizing translucency and color depth, especially when backlit.
Honed
A softer matte finish, less common due to reducing the stone’s translucent glow.
Common Wear & Mistakes
- •Etching from even mild acidic exposure, more readily than marble
- •Cracking or fracturing under impact or improper installation support
- •Scratches from everyday contact given its softness
- •Dulling of polish in areas that receive any regular touching or use
Sealing & Maintenance
- ✓Handle and clean onyx surfaces with extra care given their softness and translucency
- ✓Use only the gentlest pH-neutral cleaners, applied sparingly
- ✓Seal onyx to help reduce staining, understanding it will need more frequent attention than harder stones
- ✓Avoid placing onyx in high-traffic or high-impact locations; keep it to accent applications
